On the 5 May 1962, the “All India Heart Foundation” was established, primarily through the efforts of India's first woman cardiologist, Padma Vibhushan Awardee, Dr. S. Padmavati. She was greatly influenced by her guru Dr. Paul Dudley White, who sought to transform the way medical science catered to the needs of a common person.

A Distinguished Honour for a Distinguished Career

Dr. O. P. Yadava Conferred Honorary Doctor of Science by Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences

National Heart Institute, New Delhi, proudly congratulates its Chief Executive Officer and Chief Cardiac Surgeon, Prof. (Dr.) O. P. Yadava, on being conferred the prestigious honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc. Honoris Causa) by Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada.

The honour recognises Dr. Yadava’s outstanding contributions to cardiac surgery, medical education, research, innovation, and healthcare leadership over a distinguished career spanning more than four decades.

The honorary degree was presented by Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, Hon’ble Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chancellor of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, during the University's 27th and 28th Annual Convocations in Vijayawada.

A Legacy of Surgical Innovation

Dr. Yadava has played a pioneering role in advancing modern cardiovascular surgery in India. His contributions include the development and refinement of major surgical approaches such as:

Beating-heart (off-pump) coronary artery bypass surgery
Minimally invasive cardiac surgery
Total arterial revascularisation

His clinical contributions have helped advance standards of surgical care, patient safety and outcomes in cardiovascular surgery.

Beyond the Operating Theatre

Dr. Yadava's contribution to medicine extends far beyond clinical practice. As an educator, mentor and researcher, he has trained numerous cardiac surgeons and contributed extensively to medical literature. He has also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, contributing to the academic development of cardiovascular surgery in India.

His distinguished career has previously been recognised through several prestigious honours, including the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam in 2006, and the Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award.
